Air conditioning vents are an integral piece of an HVAC system. They are tasked with maintaining the comfort and air quality inside our homes and offices. As such, they should be regularly checked and cleaned to identify any potential performance issues. Experts recommend cleaning air vents one to two times a year, with the most common times being the beginning of spring and fall.

There are many benefits to cleaning your air ducts and vents regularly. Less dirt in your air ducts and on your ac vent covers can decrease wear and tear on your AC components helping to increase the performance and longevity of your system. Cleaner air ducts mean cleaner air in the home.
Anyone can clean their own air vents with a few common household supplies. To get started you will need:
  • vacuum cleaner or shop vac
  • screwdriver
  • cleaning brush
  • dish detergent
  • New filters
1. Turn off the power to your HVAC system
Always start by turning the power off to the connected HVAC system. This will prevent any potential accidents.
2.  Remove Vent Covers
Unscrew your AC vents and give them a thorough brushing to remove dirt and dust. If your AC vents are particularly dirty don’t be afraid to give them a wash with warm water and soap.
3. Scrub your vents
With the vent covers out of the way, grab your brush and clean along the air duct walls loosening dirt and dust. Most dust and debris gather towards the vents, so reach as far as you can. A long-handled brush can be very helpful.
4. Time to vacuum
With the dirt and dust loosened it’s time to use the vacuum and its attachments. Use the vacuum along the vent walls and in all nooks and crannies that you can reach. Repeat at each vent opening throughout the house. When finished, use a damp cloth to clean along the vent walls and attach the vent covers to their proper place.
5. Finish up
Now use your screwdriver to access the return air boot and the blower compartment by removing the panels on the front of the furnace. The majority of dust and dirt builds up around the furnace, leading to clogging. Use your vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and debris from the blower compartment. Take extra precautions when cleaning the furnace fan so as not to damage it. After cleaning your air ducts and vents, always make a point to replacing your furnace filter.
Think of vent cleaning as an investment towards efficiency. A properly maintained HVAC system gives you the desired air quality and regulates your home’s temperature more effectively.
